An animated TV series set between the events of Episode III and IV, Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. A brave and clever ragtag starship crew stands up against the evil Empire as it tightens its grip on the galaxy and hunts down the last of the Jedi Knights. Star Wars Rebels has turned out a welcoming change of scenery from The Clone Wars, and it's very watchable though sometimes a flawed gem of a show. Some of the stories in the first season alone make these chapters worthy additions to the Star Wars canon, and you can forgive the reliance on The Prequel Trilogy backstory used here, because it uses those references for some satisfying payoffs in the end. Oh, and NO JarJar Binks! *Phew*<br/><br/>Star Wars Rebels is a charming and pretty serial to look at and behold, and episodes like Rise of the Old Masters give this series real teeth and personality; it's not afraid to tackle themes that would otherwise be too much for a children's show. It's a brave show that knows when to play it safe, and when not to play it too safe if it compromises the story. Another stand out episode is Path of the Jedi, which follows some of the beats seen in 'The Empire Strikes Back': confronting your fear, the force and preparing yourself for what seems to be the inevitable. The series does borrow from the source movies, but it stands its own ground, and some of these play like entertaining apologies for The Prequels.<br/><br/>Disney has done rather well with redefining Star Wars in the 2010s thus far, and Star Wars Rebels along with The Force Awakens show they know exactly what they're doing, and they're bringing back the 'wow' in Star Wars at long last. I love Star Wars - the basic premise of an epic universe, battle of good vs evil, classic take on characters and their traits and promoting clean and pure values…Most of us love (or have loved) Star Wars for those reasons.<br/><br/>Now, do you think kids and younger teenagers will want to watch 30 year old movies and will be susceptible to the story and its values despite the "prehistoric" graphics and effects? Unfortunately, most of them won't be attracted and will watch it if you make them and look at it through that lens to some extent - and that is reality.<br/><br/>So if you look at "Rebels" as a new branch in that universe, fresh content promoting the same types of characters, similar story lines and the same values - can it not be only positive that it exists? To attract today's kids and to provide content of this kind to them, instead of them watching Game of Thrones, Dexter and alike?<br/><br/>I understand that, as a die-hard Star Wars fan of 30 or 40, you can disprove the lack of originality, the relative crudeness of animation and what not - but, hey - this is Star Wars, just the same as it always has been - if you loved it before, there is no reason to hate it now, in this form.<br/><br/>So I would understand reviews of 6+, but 1? That's just lame.<br/><br/>As a 31 year old, I found it interesting and entertaining and a nice watch. Worth my time and certainly worth your kid's time. Of course, some criticism stands - i.e. recycling Alladin and alike - but we have new SW content for new generations and it's good.
Rebels takes place starting roughly 14 years after <a href="/title/tt0121766/">Revenge of the Sith</a>, and roughtly five years prior to <a href="/title/tt0076759/">Star Wars (A New Hope)</a>. The general continuity, or "canon" of the Star Wars franchise has been streamlined to include current and future feature films, <a href="/title/tt0458290/">The Clone Wars</a>, this series, and most transmedia material released after 2014. Set 14 years after Anakin Skywalker betrayed the Jedi Order and became the evil robotic Sith Lord Darth Vader and the formation of the evil Galactic Empire and 5 years before the Battle of Yavin, which Luke Skywalker destroyed the Death Star. Star Wars Rebels follows the crew of the rebel spaceship "The Ghost' and it's crew: Jedi Kanan Jarrus whom is the ship's captain. His apprentice, the cocky 14 year old thief and con artist Ezra Bridger. The teenage Mandalorian girl Sabine Wren. The cat-like Garazeb Orellions. The ship's pilot Hera Syndulla. The genetically engineered former Republic clone trooper Rex. Former Jedi Ahsoka Tano and the protocol droid Chopper as they fight back against the evil Galactic Empire and to free the planets from it's rule and battle the evil Imperial Forces led by the Imperial agent Kallus. Lando Calrissian, Princess Leia Organa, Bail Organa, Darth Vader, R2-D2, C-3PO, Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, Yoda, and Obi-Wan Kenobi have all appeared at least once. Ezra was born on Empire Day (The day the Republic fell and became the Galactic Empire), 19 years Before the Battle of Yavin. Making him 14 at the start of the series.
